Taiwan's independence-leaning DemocraticProgressive Party not only won a presidency in theelection but majority in the legislature for the firsttime, a development that could have a big impact oneconomic policies with China.

Tsai has pledged to maintain peace and stablerelations with the world's second largest economybut also with demanding the vote and will of Taiwan's people not be overlooked.

“Our democratic system, national identity, and international space must be respected, anyforms of suppression will harm the stability of cross-strait relations”.

National party KMT's candidate, Chu, says he will resign as head of the party and apologizedfor the historical landslide loss.

His party not only lost presidency but 24 seats in the island legislature as well.

“We have been defeated. The KMT lost this election. We won't fill voters'expectations.

We fell down our responsibility to this nation.”

Tsai will not sworn office until on May 20 but the new legislature will be sworn to office in earlyFebruary.

When Tsai becomes Taiwan's president, dealing with the island's biggest trading partner,China, and helping strengthen a faltering economy, as well as wage stagnation are somebody'skey challenge she will face.
