Tuition fees

During tuition-free periods, students from Austria, students from other EU or EEA countries, convention refugees, and students from all other countries who hold a non-student residence permit are exempt from paying tuition fees!

For universities that offer multiple academic programmes, tuition-free periods are calculated for each academic programme. Tuition fees are set in accordance with academic programmes in which the tuition-free period ends the earliest. In this case, a student’s main subject is irrelevant.

Students are automatically re-registered if tuition fees have been paid on time and in full.

If you are simultaneously enrolled in an academic programme at another university, you are only required to pay tuition fees once. However, you will only be re-registered at the university to which you have paid tuition fees. You must inform all the other universities of your registration within the admissions period or the subsequent grace period.

How much tuition will I have to pay?

Pursuant to § 91 of the Universities Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz, UG), the following regulations concerning tuition fees will apply starting in the summer semester of 2013.

Membership to the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) is compulsory for all degree programme and non-degree programme students and costs € 18.70. The ÖH membership dues must be paid by all students, including those whose tuition fees are waived.

  Degree program students:

The standard tuition fee is € 363.36 per semester. The tuition fee for third-country nationals is € 726.72 per semester. Payment during the extended enrollment period increases the standard fee of € 363.36 by 10%. The tuition fee of € 726.72 for third-country nationals does not increase in the extended enrollment period.

As a general rule, these tuition fees are compulsory for all students at all Austrian universities. However, tuition fees can be waived permanently or temporarily for certain groups of students unter certain conditions.

  Non-degree programme students:

These students are required to pay the standard tuition fee of € 363.36 and the ÖH membership dues (€ 18.70) starting in the first semester of their studies, regardless of nationality. Enrollment or re-registration during the extended enrollment period does not increase the tuition fee.

Tuition fees are waived for non-degree programme students enrolled only in a certificate programme (Universitätslehrgang) or a university preparation programme (Vorstudienlehrgang). These students must only pay the programme fee and the ÖH membership dues.
